What Lighthouse is about
Lighthouse is a holiday week for children aged 4-11 run by Christians from local churches. As Christians, we believe the Bible is God's word to us. That is, it shows us how to live and above all that God sent his son, Jesus Christ, into the world to die so that our sins may be forgiven, and to rise again so we might know him. We know from our experience that God is able to provide a peace and a hope that cannot be found elsewhere.
At Lighthouse our aim is for children to discover God's amazing love for us all. We aim to present God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, to allow children to explore the Bible and to give opportunities for them to accept Jesus as their saviour and special friend - but of course it is always the child's own unpressured choice.
Lighthouse started in Great Missenden in the 1980's where it now attracts around 1500 children each day of Lighthouse week. In fact, it has grown so large that children have had to be turned away. To allow more children to experience the week, we began at the Hazlemere site in 2000. In recent years, further sites have started up at Burnham and Princes Risborough, Marlow, and now Wycombe (RGS) this year. We have worked in close partnership with Great Missenden and until 2004 have been accountable to the same charitable trust. In 2005, encouraged by Lighthouse Great Missenden, Hazlemere became a charity in its own right. Wycombe Lighthouse is also now a separate charity. Those who have planned LHH come mainly from churches in Hazlemere, Penn, and from 'Churches Together in East Wycombe' which includes Terriers, Totteridge and Micklefield. The Royal Grammar School site is being supported by more churches in the High Wycombe area.
Daily Timetable
Each day at Lighthouse has the same basic shape:
At the start and end of each day all the children gather in the 'stadium' (Main Marquee) for the Main-Stage session with lively worship songs, competitions, slapstick etc.
The rest of the day is split into five 30-minute sessions - teaching, Lighthouses (small groups), performing arts, craft and games - plus lunch.
The fours programme is for the morning only.
There is a separate mornings-only programme for parents and toddlers at Holy Trinity Church on Amersham Road.
